Gallipoli Uncovered · Lesson 4
Coming home, what it changed, and finding your soldier
Name: ____________________
How did Gallipoli end, what did it cost, and what did it change for New Zealand?
How did it end?
Between 15 and 20 December 1915, the soldiers left Anzac at night. They set up drip rifles: water dripped into a tin until it was heavy enough to pull the trigger.
Why did the leaving work so much better than the landing?
The cost
2,779 New Zealanders died at Gallipoli. About 18,000 died in the whole war. Most families and towns lost someone.
Name one way the war changed New Zealand:
Find your soldier
Search for the man from our class roll (or one from your town) at theanzacs.co.nz. Fill in his card.
| His name | |
|---|---|
| Rank and number | |
| Unit | |
| Troopship | |
| Date he sailed | |
| Fate (what happened) | |
| Medals he was likely given | |
| Where he rests |
Tip: medals are worked out from his dates. If he sailed by the end of 1915, he was likely given the 1914-15 Star. Most men got the British War Medal and Victory Medal. If he died, his family got a Memorial Plaque.
One thing that surprised me
Some of the men we find did not come home. If that is hard, tell your teacher and you can choose another soldier.
