Evidence · no invented units

Sources

Every name on The Anzacs Roll Call comes from a primary record. We file men under regiment and group when the embarkation unit string names them. We add a SQN only when a source names a squadron for that man. We do not invent Canterbury, Auckland, Wellington or Otago Mounted Rifles Main Body territorial squadrons.

Primary name and unit sources

Auckland Museum Online Cenotaph
Names, ranks, embarkation units, ships, voyages, fate and death dates. Licensed CC BY 4.0. Online Cenotaph. This is Source A for ship audit and the default source for SQN (Cenotaph).
ADFA NZEF Project
Australian Defence Force Academy digitised NZEF unit and soldier pages (nzef.adfa.edu.au). Used only when a unit page names a Squadron and we can match the man by service number within the same regiment. Key on the roll: ADFA. October 2026 probe: no squadron-named Mounted Rifles unit pages found for Main Body territorial fills; overlay is empty until ADFA publishes such lists.

Cemetery locations

Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ)
Locations of every New Zealand cemetery for the The Anzacs Cemetery Roll Call, from the Topo50 layers NZ Cemetery Points and NZ Cemetery Polygons. Sourced from the LINZ Data Service and licensed for reuse under CC BY 4.0. LINZ gives cemetery locations, not burials.
Burials
Who rests where comes from Online Cenotaph, plus council open data from Christchurch City, Marlborough District and Palmerston North City councils (CC BY 4.0). Full cemetery sources.

SQN field

The SQN column shows a proven squadron label (letter A–J, ordinal such as 4th Squadron, or No. N Squadron) extracted from the Cenotaph embarkation unit, or filled from the ADFA overlay when Cenotaph is blank. Blank means no squadron is named on the sources we hold for that man. Grouping under a regiment still follows the full unit string (reinforcement draft, company, battalion, or “Main Body and other”).

Ships and Gallipoli framing

Navy Museum troopship list
Source B for dual-source ship ticks. Troopships departed NZ WW1.
Gallipoli landing numbers
Published New Zealand estimate about 16,000 to 18,000 (Crawford & Buck, Phenomenal & Wicked; WW100). Dual-audited embarkation on a Gallipoli-pipeline ship is travel proof, not a per-man landing certificate. See Gallipoli landing audit and the audit trail for the October 2026 DVA portal correction.

Campaigns and killed

Campaign toggles are derived from embarkation date, unit arm, fate, death date and resting-place cemetery names where we have them. Killed in war means fate is Killed in action, Died of wounds, or Died of illness, or a death date is recorded. Mapping detail: docs/roll-call.md in the project repo.
